AP* Biology Prep Course

The FlinnPREP™ AP* Biology Prep Course is a complete review of biology’s core concepts to set students on a path of success in AP* Biology. Students use this course to refresh their understanding of photosynthesis, respiration, protein synthesis, cell division and big-picture applications in ecology and evolution. This course will review:

Laboratory Safety Course for Undergraduates

Flinn Scientific’s Online Laboratory Safety Course for Undergraduates combines six major safety topics into one 60-minute review. The course is aligned with the American Chemical Society’s Guidelines and Evaluation Procedures for Bachelor’s Degree Programs (May 2015) and is created in a way that it can be easily incorporated throughout your undergraduate science curriculum. Flinn’s online course uses interactive learning to present the key tenets of safety in the undergraduate science laboratory that include:

  • Responsible chemical disposal techniques
  • Compliance with safety regulations
  • Proper use of safety and personal protective equipment

Progress Monitoring

Teachers create a FlinnPREP™ teacher account for free. Once this account is activated, a teacher can preview all course content at no charge. Teachers can also create a FlinnPREP™ classroom, invite students to join that classroom, and track progress throughout the course.

With FlinnPREP™, teachers will see the strengths and weaknesses of their students from a detailed perspective. The diagnostic reports provide a detailed analysis of the course performance at the unit level for individual students and for each teacher classroom. FlinnPREP™ also provides teachers with a detailed view of all student assessment results to determine where each individual student is struggling while also providing reteach opportunities via video, animation, and content.

FlinnPREP™ courses contain multiple units of content and each unit is broken down into subtopics. Teachers have access to classroom and student reports that provide up-to-the minute results for each subtopic based on student assessment results. Strength level indicators provide teachers a clear picture of overall classroom performance.

Year-Round Learning

The “new” AP* Chemistry and AP* Biology exams assess conceptual and higher order cognitive skills rather than algorithmic and lower order cognitive skills. These redesigned exams have left large collections of sample exam questions outdated and less effective as preparatory tools.

Meet the Authorship Team

Lead Authors

Mike Marvel leads the Chemistry team at Flinn Scientific, including the development of laboratory manuals, online courseware and professional development programs; and the presentation of workshops at national and regional science education conferences. Prior to joining Flinn, Mike spent three years as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Aurora University, where he taught Inorganic and General Chemistry and led an undergraduate research program funded by American Chemical Society Undergraduate Young Investigator and National Science Foundation Transforming Education in Undergraduate Education awards. In addition, Mike was co-leader of a team that developed a Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership graduate program of study, started with funding from the Illinois Math and Science Partnership grant program. Mike has authored or co-authored thirteen manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, on topics ranging from unique pedagogies in the science lab to the commercial applications of solid state metal oxides. Mike holds a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Connecticut College and a Ph.D. in Inorganic and Solid State Chemistry from Northwestern University.

Meg Griffith is a scientist at Flinn Scientific and leads all content development activities for the Biology team. Meg presents workshops on AP* Biology, Biology and Forensics at local, regional, and national conferences including National Science Teachers Association, National Association of Biology Teachers, and Vernier Software & Technology Summer Institutes. She taught high school biology and environmental science for ten years and created curriculum for two new courses. Meg served on the advisory committee for the revision of the State Science Standards for Oregon and worked to establish district-wide learning targets for implementation of standards-based learning and a physics first course sequence in the Beaverton School District. She was awarded a Murdock Partners in Science Fellowship in 2008 and received support from the Nike School Innovation Fund. She is interested in supporting teachers in the use of technology and innovative approaches to student-centered learning.

Contributing Authors

Lee Ferguson is the lead AP* Biology teacher at Allen High School in Allen, Texas. In her nineteen years of teaching, Lee has taught all levels of biology including Pre-AP*, AP*, IB and a sheltered biology course for ELL students. She has served as an AP* Reader for College Board since 2006, and is the founder of the Dallas/Fort Worth AP* Biology Professional Learning Community, which provides teacher-led collaboration and professional development for its members. Lee was named the Texas Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year in 2010 by the National Association of Biology Teachers and currently serves as the President-Elect of the Texas Association of Biology Teachers. Lee also served on the committee of educators that revised the Texas curriculum standards for biology, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in 2009.

Helen Snodgrass is an AP* Biology teacher at YES Prep North Forest in Houston, Texas. She also serves as the Science Director for YES Prep. As a teacher of introductory biology and AP* Biology, she also develops AP* Biology curriculum materials for YES Prep and for Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) BioInteractive. She was named the Outstanding New Biology Teacher of the Year in 2014 by the National Association of Biology Teachers and is currently a Senior Fellow with the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation. Helen also spends her time developing curriculum for new science teachers at Relay Graduate School of Education in New York and has participated in the National Association of Biology Teachers and Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BCBS) AP* Biology Leadership Academy.

Kathy Van Hoeck is a science teacher at York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. In her twenty-two years of teaching, Kathy has taught honors biology, AP* Biology, genetics, college-level sciences and vocational education. She developed curriculum for Advanced Placement* Biology, Genetics/Biotechnology/Bioethics and Medical Careers and two of her lab manuals are published by Flinn Scientific. Kathy is an AP* Reader and table leader for College Board, and an Ambassador for the BioInteractive program at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She was named the Illinois Biology Teacher of the Year in 2009 by the National Association of Biology Teachers and is currently a regional director for the Illinois Science Teachers Association.
